Today, June 4 is the 9th year anniversary of our opening day. We started out with 6 classes a week held in the Los Alamos YMCA basketball court and a U-Haul truck for our equipment. Before the beginning of each class, the coaches had to assemble the gym by carrying our bars, beams, and other equipment from the truck. Our floor consisted of borrowed panel mats from the YMCA. Our first June session had around 45 students enrolled. Here are a few photos from June 4, 2009, our opening day.
Two years later, we moved to our corner next to Metzgers, and five years after that, to our present location where we have around 45 classes a week and over 250 students. Congratulations to coaches Leslie, Lynne, Linda, and David who founded High Flyers and are still a part of it today!
Congratulations to Tara, who did an impressive job representing High Flyers at the NM Xcel Championships last month. Tara competed in the Xcel Silver division and scored a 36.6 All-Around, with a 8.8 on bars, 8.95 on floor, 9.35 on beam, and 9.5 on vault. Her scores earned her the top spot in the annual High Flyers Achievers banner for vault and beam. Way to go Tara!
We celebrated many competition successes at our annual team banquet, held at Cottonwood on the Green. Congratulations to all our 2017-18 team members!
Members of the Level 2 and 3 teams are competing in their third meet of the year this weekend in Belen at the Monopoly meet while the Level 4-8 teams head to the Classic Rock Meet in Phoenix. Good luck to our all athletes!
Congratulations to our Level 2 team who took First Place Team at the Eagle Ridge Winter Invitational meet January 13. This is only the second meet ever for these girls. Great Job Team and Coaches Leslie and Ashley!
This Saturday marks the official start of our competitive season. Our Level 2 through 5 gymnasts will be competing at the Winter Fiesta held at Zia Gymnastics December 2. For 15 of our level 2 and 3 gymnasts, this will be their first meet ever! Come watch the fun. Sessions start at 8:30 AM and run all day. Good luck to all our team competitors!
Now that the competitive season has drawn to an end, I am in awe of what our team and coaches have accomplished this year. Our team gymnasts posted record scores this season, with every competitor demonstrating strength and maturity in her performances.
State championship titles went to Seanna on L2 bars, Mia on L2 floor, and Emily on L4 vault and floor. Mia, Isabelle, Siena, and Emily placed second All-Around at the NM State championships. Ashley, Kailey, and Naomi took third. But even more impressive than the medals earned were the high scores this year - six girls received 36+ all-around scores and another 12 received 35+ all-around scores. And for the first time ever, High Flyers sent a Level 7 gymnast to the Regional Championships.
Next week, a new group of athletes will begin their competitive journey as we welcome 13 new team members to Level 2. Our current team members are already hard at work preparing for next season and learning new skills. We are so blessed to have such a remarkable and talented group of young women to work with and who make us so proud. You are truly HIGH FLYERS!
Cheer on Ashley this weekend at the Level 7 Regional Championships to be held Thursday through Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Ashley will be competing against the best gymnasts from throughout Region 3, which is comprised on Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming. Ashley's third place finish and score of 35.825 at the New Mexico State Championships last month earned her a spot at the regional championships. She is the first ever High Flyer to do so. Congratulations and Good Luck Ashley!
High Flyers had an excellent showing at the Zia Winter Fiesta held December 3 in Santa Fe, and walked away with four first place medals. Congratulations go out to all our team gymnasts!
Siena placed first all-around in the Level 4 middle age division with a score of 35.0, beating her nearest competitor by .45. In the same age division, Emily placed first on beam with a score of 9.05.
Sarah took the gold medal on beam in the Level 5 older age division, while Mairen scored an amazing 9.5 to win first on vault in Level 3.
Impressive results were posted by all seventeen High Flyers gymnasts competing in the meet. This meet marked the first time competing in a new, higher level for 11 of the 17.
